Audacity needs MP3 support on Debian

I'm running Kanotix, a debian based distro and need to export files from Audacity as mp3. Audacity asks for the file, libmp3lame.so to do this. Previously on a Fedora system, I installed lame which put libmp3lame.so in /usr/lib/. However in debian I couldn't find lame. I eventually found it in the unofficial library, but installing it from there didn't produce the needed libmp3lame.so file. Is lame being replaced by something else? If so, what, and how do I satisfy Audacity's requirement?

Thanks,
Ron
