audacity help (mic won't work)

I installed Audacity becasue I need to record some reading.
The mic works (I can hear myself in the speaker), but I cannot make audacity to record from it.
Looked at audacitys homepage (http:/audacity.sourceforge.net), and my preferens don't look anything like the onw they have (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/manu..._basics_3.html)

I have no tabs at the top. And can only change in and out.
(in /dev/dsp, out /dev/dsp)
are there any mysterious plugins i could have missed?

While this isn't, strictly speaking, a double post; you should at least mention and provide a link to your other thread where you asked the same question. That way, the discussion doesn't get split up with people double- and cross-talking.

Just thought that this might attract som audacity users that the other wont.
