Audacity: error initializing i/o layer

When I open Audcity I get the following error massage:
Code:
Audacity: error initializing i/o layer
you will not be able to play or record audio
In the past I needed to make sure esd was shut down (which is basically what's mentioned in this post ). I've also checked if there xmms, xine or similar apps are still running, but there are none. What else should I check and how do I avoid/correct this error from coming up again without e.g. logging out and nack in?

I found this other thread which asked something similar, but it got no response + I use gnome (am using kppp though).

How can I get sound back in Audacity?

The culprit ppears to be arts. I got this error every time I used k3b and discovered arts stays loaded even after k3b is shut down. To find the exact name of the process I did:

$ top | grep arts

and then killed the process through it's pid.

Not so...

This time I've killed artsd and esd and still audacity can't access the soundcard. Top doesn't tell me anything useful (as far as I can see, but then again, I'm not sure what exactly I should look for. This is all very annoying...

Last time i got the error I tried finding out if artsd was maybe running somewhere esle. It turned out root had it running (don't understand why). killing it restored access to the soundcard.

Now however I've done a "sudo killall artsd" and still get the i/o error... still at a loss.

I have currently running:
Firefox (no problems up to now)
Kppp (shouldn't use the soundcard, or should it... for tone dialing?)
Amule (??)
Evolution
Thunderbird... KILLED IT: SOUND BACK!! So that was the problem!
