audacious can't play anything (sound system problem?)
Hi.
I have a really strange problem here: audacious can't play anything. I checked the log file found in /home/xyz/.audacious/log and it sais this right after I start audacious:
Code:
** LOGGING STARTED AT Fri May 30 16:34:03 2008
loading of (null) failed
device: default
It seems, that it cannot load the sound device. I don't understand why. I tested the sound server (ALSA) in kcontrol and it worked. Other apps seem to be able to use the sound device too, like xine, kmplayer and mplayer itself. Also, I tried playing with the ALSA output plugin in audacious (setting devices other than default), but no positive results.
Another problem occured yesterday, maybe the source of the problem is the same as for the above: I tried to open an ogg-theora movie, and xine said that the audio device cannot be reached.
What can be the problem? Last week everything worked just fine.
2 days ago I installed all the dev packeges needed for compiling a package. I don't think it can mess up things, but who knows... Any ideas?
Thanks.

Well, I'm using Mepis 7.0 (as it's written under my username on the left side of the page), and yes I update it regularly. Of course, it doesn't mean that I have the latest and greatest packages, since Mepis 7.0 uses Debian Etch packages mainly (of course Mepis has an own repo too, but there are only key packages needed for Mepis to be Mepis , but audacious is not a key package ). We all know, that Etch packages are outdated a bit.
What do you think: deleting audacious completely and than installing again, can help? I think I'll try.
Other suggestions?

Well, I did what I just suggested myself: completely remove audacious (with config files), I also deleted the .audacious folder in my home directory, and after these, I made a fresh install of it.
It works without problems now.
Another thread solved.
Anyway, thanks everybody for the suggestions.

glad you got it working. Sorry, that's what I meant when I wrote about reinstalling audacious. It happened to me a few times and usually deleting the config files helps.
regards

Yes, it seem that we misunderstood each other. Reinstalling means use the reinstall feature of synaptic for me. It doesn't do anything, but overwrites application files, without touching config files.
Now I gave another meaning for the word reinstall.
Thanks.
