ASUS EEE901 + debian lenny + ALSA + VLC = silence

For all my googling I can't find anything which fits my symptoms.

I have an ASUS EEE 901.
I installed debian lenny (proper debian iso, not the eee img, as I want LVM).
Initially there was no sound, I installed ALSA, which cured this.
Today I installed VLC, which doesn't make any noise.

Sound is on, and isn't muted, and other apps make noise.
I have manually set VLC to use ALSA for output, and manually set ALSA to use my sound card (both are settings within VLC).

Any ideas?

since noone has replied and I do not have your hw...have you looked to see if your sound modules are loaded?
