arts volume too loud after startup

Hi. I have a cheap ac97 sound card so it makes an awful sound when the arts volume is too high. When starting kde, arts volume is always set to "0", wich is far too loud for me. How can I change this default volume, or is there a way of saving the volume when shutting down and having that volume at startup?

thanks,
tessx
