Arts alsa config

I've got an LFS system with the newest alsa running as well as kde 3.1. (both working fine) But when I try to enter the arts configuration (under kde's GUI sound configuration utilities) I get a spinning sound card icon and then the program just goes away.
I'm pretty sure I screwed up a setting when installing kde the first time around and my config files for arts are corrupt. I was wondering how to configure arts from the command prompt to run the alsa drivers, I'm also using the newest version of arts. Would it be best to do the whole install of qt arts alsa and kde over again? I can't find anything about how to configure arts on the web besides things that don't work on my machine(the stuff in kde's control center). Thanks in advance.
