Artists but no songs in Amarok collection

When I load up Amarok, it searches through and finds all my music and list the separate artists in the colloction tab. It says at the bottom "207 Tracks" like it realizes what's there.

But, when I try to play anything, it says at the bottom "Attempted to insert nothing into playlist." When I try to expand any Artist heading, it doesn't display any tracks underneath.

Neither .mp3 files nor .ogg files display or play. Downloaded podcasts do not play even if they are sitting in the playlist. It says "Playing" whatever and the blue title bar appears at the bottom of the screen but that's it.

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling but none of it helps. I have a feeling I'm missing something simple. Amarok has never worked on this computer. Do you think it could be hardware? Other music programs work fine. Can anyone help?

the engine your using is playing up.

in amarok

Settings>Configure Amarok> Engine

change it to something else.
xine-engine
arts-engine
gstreamer-engine

i like gstreamer, arts is unreliable
i've never got xine to work.
