Are there any practical a/v and anti spyware softwares for Xubuntu?
I have this brokerage account and the company's website guarantees against fraudlulent withdrawls IF I have certain conditions met, including having anti-virus and anti-spyware software installed.
I know there's Clam AV but isn't that only a scanner? And is there any anti-spyware software for Linux?
Maybe consider contacting them about that?
That you're using a Linux OS that diminished the odds of ever obtaining malware (like repositories with signed software, not using a admin account, etc), that you don't download software from websites and see if you can get a exception in writing.
If that fails just go with tripwire or something. It detects changes in your filesystem after installed in specified directories. Most antivirus "for linux" from what I understand simply scan for windows viruses
Thanks offgridguy. Yeah, those are scanners I think but I don't think there's a live a/v for Linux anyway. I'll get one of those at least. Then I'll at least be able to tell them I have something. Appreciate it.

Gregg: It is my experience that the 'guys' who told you this likely don't know the difference between anti-virus and anti-spyware
so it is my opinion that "Clam Anti-Virus" fits the bill perfectly.

Ignore any mention of a GUI. This was removed at some point in v.9 and it is now command-line only.
Thanks hydrurga. I remember looking at Sophos a while back and thinking it was great but then when I tried to get it they had not made it readily available. I'll investigate it again and contact you for your notes (thanks for the offer) if I decide to go ahead with it.

No worries. And if they ask about your OS, I usually reply with "Not Windows" and leave it at that.
Sad is I know more about their stuff than they do. Seriously.

If you're still using Xubuntu, probably the easiest way to install it is through Synaptic. Be sure to also grab the "clamtk" package if you want to use ClamAV with a GUI (Graphical User Interface.)

Once you decide one or more products, I'd ask them if they meet the conditions to cover you under the guarantee, and, if so, get it in writing.

Thanks ardvark. I got it the way you said (synaptic). Only thing is it says "The antivirus signatures are outdated." Then when I click on the Update feature it say the updates are set to automatic. Know what's up with that?
And I scanned my Home folder (which has like 5GB of stuff in it) and Clam scanned it instantly and found no threats. And I mean instantly. It can't possibly scan that fast. (Or can it?) So what's going on?
