ardour pkg-config problem

I've recently built a system using the Linux From Scratch method and when I try to run

sh autogen.sh

at the root of the ardour source tree (CVS) I get a message that pkg-config is not 'properly' installed. I've tried exporting PKG_CONFIG_PATH to /usr/local/lib/pkgconfig as well as reinstalling it to /usr/lib/pkgconfig and exporting the path appropriately. Neither installation with either path is 'properly installed'.I've got the pre-emptive kernel patch and low-latency patch as well as all of the requirements listed on ardour's requirements page. Tried re-downloading from CVS-no go. I've just got done re-installing the whole system and all requirements listed up to this point including pkg-config. Is the newest version incompatible with ardour? I've been searching the web for like six days now and the only thing I can find is about exporting the path.
I've put the same path in my ld.so.conf. I'm running this on a SIS K7SEM board with the onboard sound and video, the alsa drivers are installed and work fine. Any help would be greatly appreciated and if you can't help thanks for looking.

ALSA on a K7SEM ?

You said that you got ALSA working on a K7SEM. How did you do that?
I'm running a very recent kernel (Suse 8.2, v.2.4.20) on the K7SEM, and can't make the SiS 730/7018 chip do anything. All the hardware shows up in the dmesg & lsmod calls, but nothing about ALSA. There is no /proc/asound/cards.

Any ideas? What is the formula?

Wayne
