Ardour does not work and cannot be uninstalled?
 

Hi there,
Very new to Linux, runing Ubuntu 7.10. Was looking for a multitrack recorder like Audition, figured Ardour would do. Did find it with add/remove programs, but could not check it to install, the checkbox just dd not react.
Installed manually, found the commands on ardour.org, but after installation I am unable to get the program to operate, it will not play/record, the bar is just not moving at all.
Was able to import a track, but that also does not want to play back.
Checked Jack, installed alsamixer, and seems all is fine, can also play normal audio, and microphone is working for skype.
Now want to uninstall, but am unable to do so again with the add/remove, again the checkbox will not be selected.

So Q1: I'd still be interested to get this working, would anybody know what the problem is, and if not,

Q2: How can I uninstall the program manually (need command lines, not much experience yet..)

How did you install it manually - what does that mean?

Good question..I know I found it on the ardour webpages, think it was apt-get install ardour, but am not sure anymore.

If it was installed with apt-get, that should result in the same thing as using the add-remove programs from the Application menu (both are front-ends for the same underlying package management system).

You can check to see the status of the installation from a terminal with this command:
This will show something like this:
If you would execute this command and paste the results it would be helpful to find out what is going on on your system.

Thanks, but as said when using add/remove I cannot uncheck the box, it simply does not react. It does work for other programs, just not for the ardour installation.

If anybody knows a nice multitrack recorder fit for single processor 1Ghz with 512MB ram I'd be very interested.

Ardour is a pretty sophisticated app, I would imagine your failure to get it working is due to one of the very large number of settings in the program. Did you follow some documentation about how to set it up, or just try to work it out as you go along?

I tried the program not long ago, and tried the latter route (trying to work it out using intuition) and found that it was not easy to figure out how to get it working. I think ardour is the best bet if you want a really sophisticated audio editing suite, but it's probably too complicated unless you are an experienced audio engineer.

To uninstall it, you can do it lots of ways. Using synaptic is probably the most 'discoverable' for the new user, but it's harder to explain, so I will tell you the command line method... In a terminal use this command:
For simpler work, the accepted wisdom seems to be that Audacity is a good program, although I always found the interface to be a little ugly. I have to say I have not used any audio recording app heavily - this is not my area. I have only ever tinkered out of curiosity.

Why don't you install ubuntu-studio. As far as I remember, it comes with Ardour pre-installed, and LOW-latency kernel!!!
