An open source digital recording application has been released for linux by these guys:
http://ardour.sourceforge.net/
It looks pretty promising. I might have to try this out.

Woohoo, thanks for the update! I'm sure there's more than a few audiophiles on here that'll be happy to know this.
Just got a question though, for anyone... Why this over say, audacity? Or is it just personal preference?
Cool

So far I've just stuck with SONAR on Windows for combined midi and audio recording, doesn't look like it's got midi editing on it but I'll check it out.

Well, reading over the pages at the Ardour site I have found an answer to my question of what a good soundcard for this type of thing is. It seems the recommended soundcard runs around $550. hmmm...I may have to hold off on this project. I don't think I'd want to dive right in with a purchase like that and just hope that I can get the thing up and recording.
I guess I'd also have to get some high quality speakers as well. I wonder if anyone has any documentation on building a Home Recording Studio with Linux. Off to google....

And of course, once you return with all the knowledge in the world on this you are gonna post up a great tutorial/how-to right
550! Whoa. That's a little steeper than the 90 bux I paid for my SB Live!

Hopefully it'll do the job - try it out once my hangover lightens up in about a week or so. Be could to hammer one more nail into the windows dependency coffin.
