Ardour - configure cannot find glib-config

I'm trying to compile ardour, configure fails when it cannot compile the test program. I recently installed GTK+ 2.2.2, and all the libraries should be there. I had no problems installing GTK. The first time i ran configure, it couldnt find glib-config. I then set GLIB_CONFIG to "/usr/lib/glib-2.0/include/glibconfig.h", thinking that this might help. Again, configure failed to compile the test program. I then set GLIB_CONFIG to the directory from where I installed pkg-config: ~/pkgconfig-0.15.0/glib-1.2.8/glib-config. This still doesnt work, for the same reason. Here is the last bit of the output of configure:

Code:
./configure --prefix /usr

checking if gcc supports -fno-rtti -fno-exceptions... yes
checking whether the linker (/usr/bin/ld) supports shared libraries... yes
checking how to hardcode library paths into programs... immediate
checking whether stripping libraries is possible... yes
checking dynamic linker characteristics... GNU/Linux ld.so
checking if libtool supports shared libraries... yes
checking whether to build shared libraries...
checking whether to build static libraries... yes
creating libtool
checking for glib-config... no
checking for GLIB - version >= 1.0.0... no
*** The glib-config script installed by GLIB could not be found
*** If GLIB was installed in PREFIX, make sure PREFIX/bin is in
*** your path, or set the GLIB_CONFIG environment variable to the
*** full path to glib-config.
configure: error: *** ardour requires glib, but it doesn't appear to be installed
configure: error: /bin/sh './configure' failed for ardour
configure: error: /bin/sh './configure' failed for libs
any ideas? I would really like to compile this program
thanks

just in case you did not already do so, my glib config is located in /usr/bin/glib-config, and after you set the environment variable you need to run 'ldconfig'
