I'm using opensuse 11.1 with KDE 3.5.10 and I can right-click and select Compress --> Compress As. The available formats are: gz, bz2, tar, tar.gz, tar.bz2, zip. Which file manager are you using?

If you mean 'compress at the command line 'man -k zip' or 'man -k compress' gives a number of possibilities.

(I don't really know whether you mean 'to zip' as a generic for 'to compress into a single file' and I don't know whether command line solutions are acceptable to you in this context.)
