you have a funny looking 'a' where ? not sure what you are talking about that aptitude looks funny.
could it be a locale or font issue ?

I normally run aptitude from the command line and don't bother with the curses interface, so it's never looked funny to me

dpkg-reconfigure locales

I don't know what your proper locale setting would be. mine is en_US.UTF-8 but I live in the US..

Code:
cat /etc/environment
LANG="en_US.UTF-8"

Hi Mahmoud,
Looking at your thumbnail attached I would guess that you're not using the correct encoding for your terminal program. Have you tried changing it until aptitude looks right?
cheers,
jdk

I have used this: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=622018
The article describes changing screen resolution but in doing so it also explains how to change locales; they key is running this:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure console-setup

Note: this describes the Ubuntu method; AFAIK Debian does not use console-tools so the method should be different one. Just do not ask me which one.

it-lenny:~$ aptitude search ~i | grep console-tools
i console-tools - Linux console and font utilities

Yep Debian has console-tools installed.
