Aptitude in redhat or sort of.

Hi there,
I was wondering if there is any software like Aptitude used in Debian but then for redhat.
I try to install a few software packages on my redhat 9.0 but always encounter problems with dependencies.
Now Maybe somebody knows of a software specially made for RH9.0 where I can install the software I require automatcly and automaticly get all the dependencies installed as well without getting bugged with dependency checks and errors?

Thanks in advance,
Attila

You can use Yum to do that. Here are instructions for setting up Yum on RH9 to use with Fedora Legacy.

But also, RedHat 9 is really old and was discontinued many years ago; so if you want updated software, try something newer, like Fedora Core 5.

I agree that RH9 is pretty old. If you want stability rather than cutting-edge technology, I'd suggest that you try CentOS 4. I use FC5 myself, but it's not as stable as, say, FC4.

You point it debatable. I personally find FC5 to be more stable that FC4 and I have had no problems with it (except for the kernel issue which affected many people). I guess different hardware configuration causes different experiences when it comes to Linux distros.

As for using Redhat with YUM or APT, its okay to do that, but the problem is that many RH9 repos have not been maintained for years so do not have new packages. As others suggested, its better to move on to something newer that is still being actively developed.
