apt-type of programme that uses sources?

Is there an apt-type of programme that uses sources instead of binaries?

Like Gentoo's emerge. It downloads the sources, compiles, and gets all the dependencies for me.

Portage (emerge) and the new "swaret --compile" are the only utilities I know of that do this.

I was gonna say... I've never used a Debian-based sitro but I was always under the impression that apt could do this

There's also an apt-build project, that aims to get portage style stuff occuring on Debian systems. http://debtoo.org/ is the place to look.
