apt-get upgrade problems

Whenever I try to run apt-get upgrade, I get:

Code:
[root@pcp04374035pcs apt]# apt-get upgrade
warning: cannot get exclusive lock on /var/lib/rpm/Packages
Reading Package Lists... Done
Building Dependency Tree... Done
The following packages will be upgraded
  system-config-date
The following packages have been kept back
  SDL-devel gimp gstreamer gstreamer-plugins
1 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 removed and 4 not upgraded.
Need to get 0B/511kB of archives.
After unpacking 105kB of additional disk space will be used.
Do you want to continue? [Y/n] y
Committing changes...
Preparing... ########################################### [100%]
   1:system-config-date ########################################### [100%]
error: unpacking of archive failed on file /etc/security/console.apps/dateconfig: cpio: lsetfilecon failed - Invalid argument
W: Some errors occurred while running transaction
This seems to be a problem and a bit of a roadblock. How can I get APT to upgrade these packages? Also, what does "The following packages have been kept back" mean?

Thanks!

Update: I've fixed all the packages listed above except SDL-devel and gimp. This is what happens when I try and upgrade those two to the latest versions.

Code:
[root@pcp04374035pcs apt]# apt-get install SDL-devel
Reading Package Lists... Done
Building Dependency Tree... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:

Until the dependancies listed have stable enough packages in the source tree, you're going to be out of luck upgrading. Them's the breaks. Give it a few days.

Is that all? I thought it was going to be something far more serious. Thanks for the help!

EDIT: Oh, what about system-config-date? Does your message apply to that too?

My suspicion is that yes, your problem is likely temporary. There is a difference with using apt for rpms in that usually it relies heavily on the use of the --nodeps flag and sometimes can install packages without the right libs and dependancies, and thus screwing it up. This may have happened, but not likely. Apt for rpm has been around for a while now.

One thought. Debian usually barfs with a suggestion of running "apt-get -f install" I haven't used apt with rpms since I treied PCLinuxOS with synaptic about 6 months ago. Perhaps Fedora has a similar "fix"

Yes, vectordrake, Fedora has the same thing.
Code:
You might want to run `apt-get -f install' to correct these
It spits this at me:
Code:
[root@pcp04374035pcs k3b-0.11.14]# apt-get -f install
Reading Package Lists... Done
Building Dependency Tree... Done
Correcting dependencies... Done
The following extra packages will be installed:
  kdebase xorg-x11-xdm
The following NEW packages will be installed:
  kdebase xorg-x11-xdm
0 upgraded, 2 newly installed, 0 removed and 3 not upgraded.
Need to get 0B/23.0MB of archives.
After unpacking 44.8MB of additional disk space will be used.

According to my google queries, this error seems to be the result of a buggy package.

Well, can I expect this to be fixed at some point in the near future? BTW, thanks vectordrake, you've really been helping me a lot tonight in two of my topics.

That's the reason I come to this site. If I've been there and done that, or if I can just help figure it out, I want to do so. I got help when I first started, so it'd be wrong to not pay it forward, right? (what the hell, it gets me off to help people)

I think a few days will help the developers straighten things out. I've been through that with Debian unstable when ever Gnome or KDE goes intl heavy development mode (one of the things I like about compiling from source is the dependancy issue is less important, as version numbers aren't often used - it compiles against wat you have instead of telling what you need...)
