apt-get update-Multiple program instances

While attempting to run apt-get on my Fedora Core 3 system, I get an error message such as this:

---
This package won't be cleanly updated, unless you leave
only one version. To leave multiple versions installed,
you may remove that warning by setting the following
option in your configuration file:

RPM::Allow-Duplicated { "^udev$"; };

To disable these warnings completely set:

RPM::Allow-Duplicated-Warning "false";

W: You may want to run apt-get update to correct these problems
---

except with several other programs. I understand what it means and what I should do, but I do not know what config file I should edit, or where it is typically located on a standard install. Could somebody help me?
