apt get like program
 

Hi,

I'm looking to use Linux as a desktop OS and still deciding with distro to go for... i liked redhat but only fedora is left... any comments on that?

anyways if i decide to go with slackware or similar is there a similar program to apt get?

Slackware does have a few programs like apt-get: SWareT, slapt-get, and SlackUpdate. I've only used SWareT myself, and it does a great job of keeping my system up to date and installing whatever I need, but I have heard good things about slapt-get. I know for sure SWareT supports dependency checking which is something fairly new to Slackware. And I guess it's easy to tell by my post, I think if you're going to switch distros give Slackware a try. :)

and i personally did try slapt-get before and its the same as apt-get
you still have your list with resource sites and you can simply type
slapt-get --install <package>
so its the exact same other than the command is slapt instead of apt

Swaret is really nice as well as far as Slackware package management goes.

I've tried swaret a little bit with Slackware 9.0 and I got really disappointed. I've typed:

swaret --upgrade apache

And it broke my apache. I had to uninstall the 486 package, download the 386 for Slackware 9.0 and install it again. The same went with mysql, quanta and few other packages. Perhaps I had to upgrade the hole distro first instead of a package only? I really want to, but I'm really scared of typing "swaret --upgrade" to upgrade the hole distribution and end up with a broken system. Has anyone done it?

P.S: I want only the newer packages. I've tried Slack 9.1 for 2 days, went back to Slack 9.0 after it ;).

With SWareT you can edit the /etc/swaret.conf file and change VERSION to 9.0 and when you do swaret --upgrade it will only upgrade from the 9.0 branch. Also, you can choose which packages to upgrade because it will ask for conformation on each package before downloading. And yes, I have successfully upgraded my current distribution to current with swaret --upgrade and had no problems. But I don't use Apache, MySQL, or the like so maybe I just didn't run into any problems.

there is an apt port to redhat, and it works fine (it's also called apt - you'll find it on freshrpms)

I didn't know it was possible to set the updates to Slackware 8.1, 9.0 or 9.1. That's pretty handy :).

You can also set your version to current to get the latest upgrades.
