apt-get install gtk

I just installed Debian, and I don't know much about it yet. I don't think gtk is installed, so I tried

apt-get install gtk
apt-get install gtk+
apt-get install gtk2

and none of them worked - it says the package cannot be found. I think I am probably missing a source in my apt config file. If this is the case, what can I add? If not, what is the problem?

Get package names here:

http://www.debian.org/distrib/packages

or use aptitude.

what do you hope to do overall, that might help. The Gimp Tool Kit (gtk) is a library that is needed for certain apps. So why do you think you need it (it might helps us troubleshoot what you want to type)

Try apt-cache search <name>. Often, in case like this, there are multiple versions available so you have to specify a version name to install.

I'm using Gnome and I want to use the Bluecurve theme for Metacity. I downloaded a RedHat theme as an RPM, then I converted it to a deb package using alien. When I try to install the theme, it says I need GTK 2.0 or higher (does GTK not get installed with Debian?)

Installing GTK

I've noticed that some packages are actually looking for the GTK source code (development) files. Try installing those.

apt-get install libgtk2.0-dev

If that isn't enough, try installing other gtk packages with a similar name. You can see these by using the command

apt-cache search libgtk2.0

You might try installing libgtk2.0-0, for instance (that's the main libgtk2.0-0 package; the only reason I didn't mention it first is that, as you point out, it usually is installed and therefore isn't the problem). Or you might try libgtk2.0-bin, or others.

Hope that helps! Good luck!
