Apt/Deb torrent question

I finally decided to give Ubuntu Karmic another chance after Jaunty->Karmic upgrades killed two laptops and a desktop. Fresh installs work better.
Anyway.
Along my usual post-install trawl through the available packages, a number of them stood out that I never really paid attention to before, and they've piqued my interests.
The three packages are:
apt-p2p
apt-transport-debtorrent
debtorrent

If I understand them correctly, it's an alternate means to download pacakges through bittorrent instead of http transfers.
What I want to know is, does it work? What sort of differences could be expected between bittorrent and http transfers when it's used?
And mostly, how does one make it work?

I have never used them personally, but the concept itself doesn't make much sense. Most packages are not large enough to justify the complication of a P2P distribution system; you can download them in a few seconds on a decent HTTP/FTP server.

I guess it helps on the server side as it distributes load better, but the advantages seem pretty small.
