Question apps monitoring tool.

I want to know if it is possible to write an application/script, which will actually tell me what are the frequent applications used and list the applications that have been used for longer duration.

Dont, that's already in there, a rundown:

Quote:
top
shows all running applications/apps/stuff with stats

Quote:
iotop
shows all apps and what they're up to with the hard drive

Quote:
iftop
shows what application/app is using the internet/network, what IP addresses are involved and how mucht traffic per application/thing is generated

Quote:
ps -A
shows just what is running at the moment, see something you dont like? Kill it (seriously, that's what the command is called ...)

Quote:
kill [process number] - for example kill 1500
pkill [name] - for example pkill bad-program
Luck!
