Applications Won't Open

Hi all,

For some reason, I can't get many applications to open on my ubuntu 9.10. As far as I know, it's in a fresh install state, so it shouldn't be missing dependencies....

For example, if I try and open Pidgin, it'll appear on the taskbar for a few seconds and disappear again.
Running in terminal gives:
michael@linuxserver:~$ pidgin
Bus error
michael@linuxserver:~$

I also can't get Movie Player, Empathy or evolution to open

Help please!!

If it's on a fresh install state, install again, this look like a serious one. Many things can cause this kind of error. The permissions in the /tmp directory is one, disk space is an other. DBus can be in cause, or the system limit configuration reached. It can be a lot of things. If you have nothing to lose, just format.

If it happens again afterwards, I'd check your install media - check the image you used to create the disk, and verify it's MD5sum (or whichever other method you prefer). Also check the media itself - I've had an ISO not work on me (A certain Slackware one...) because of incorrect settings.

If there is a problem, or you're not certain, what I'd do is re-download the required image, check it, set your CD/DVD burner to some safer settings (Eg, lower burn speed) and try the resulting media instead.

TBH guys, I don't think I'll bother as the primary aim of that box is a server, which it does very well.

Thanks for the advice.
