application installation directory

Hello All!

I have read in aother post that it is not a good idea to install firefox into home directory. Why is this?

If I install any other software that is not built for a specific distro, should I install it into my home directory or elsewhere?

Thanks

I'd guess that the reason is that if it's in the home directory, nobody could access it, excpet under your username.

I've read the standard place for software that's completely self-contained is in /opt. Otherwise generally the actually executable is is /usr/bin and associated files end up in /usr/lib
