apache2 prefork + php4 + mysql

i am running debian kernel 2.4.20 and have been trying to get the combo to work. i apt-get installed all three components and nothing went wrong in the installation process, yet php doesnt work and SSI doesnt work.
any hints/advice?

there i found all the infos i needed to install the apache, but only with php, no SSL.
