apache virtual server setup

This is probably pretty noobie but I cant find anything.

Im trying to setup apache for virtual server (named) but cant get it to work.

im trying to point server or document root (tried both) to /home/generalchaos or /home/generalchaos/public_html (not sure if the pub html folder is required) since I dont want to have to make all my users a folder in the /var/www directory. I have a index.html sitting in public_html just to test if its going to work.

Anyway, any changes I make it just goes to the /var/www/htdocs/index.html . I see the directory line further up in httpd.conf, but I worry that changing that will change it for all of my servers.

As it sits right now I have this entered, but ive changed it a lot

<VirtualHost *>
ServerName www.adubz.com
DocumentRoot /home/generalchaos/public_html/
</VirtualHost>

Need some help please!

for some reason even after editing /usr/local/apache2/conf/http.conf I can not get it to point away from /usr/local/apache2/htdocs

Very frustrating, ive changed all the directories in httpd.conf, restarted apache, and it still does not leave that directory.

u: I can not get it to point away from /usr/local/apache2/htdocs

try starting apache with command ./httpd -config /path/to/httpd.conf
think it's located in /usr/local/apache2/bin

Bump, I still cant figure out why it wont get out of /var/www

I tried your suggestion womd, im using slack10 so some of these commands may be different. I also check line 358 and theres nothing there to be invalid.

"root@:~# httpd -f /usr/local/apache2/conf/httpd.conf
[Mon Sep 26 20:08:50 2005] [warn] Apache does not support line-end comments. Consider using quotes around argument: "#-1"
Syntax error on line 358 of /usr/local/apache2/conf/httpd.conf:
Invalid command 'Order', perhaps mis-spelled or defined by a module not included in the server configuration
root@:~# httpd "-f" /usr/local/apache2/conf/httpd.conf
