Apache, Tomcat and Authentication?

Ok, so I'm trying to figure out how to authenticate using mod_auth for apache 2.0.47, and tomcat 4.1.24. I have set up several static directories to be authenticated, which works fine. But take this for instance:

Alias /bunk "/etc/httpd/tomcat/webapps/bunk"

<Directory "/etc/httpd/tomcat/webapps/bunk">
Options FollowSymLinks
AuthType Basic
AuthName "Go Away"
AuthUserFile /etc/httpd/passwords/passwd
require valid-user
</Directory>

This will make the literal "http://host/bunk" get authenticated, but not even "http://host/bunk/" will, or anything below that (IE /bunk/bunk.html).

What's going on here??

TIA

B.
