Apache Suse 9.1

When I try starting Apache from Runlevel editor, in Suse 9.1, always get the following message :

/etc/init.d/apache2 start returned 7 (program not running)
Starting httpd2 (prefork) ..failed

I can't either starting Apache as root from command line.

Can someone help ?

SuSE starts apache a bit differently then other distros(?). Try:

rcapache2 start

you could, alternatively, run Apache from YaST, under Runlevel editor...

Good luck!

EDIT: sorry, did not see that you've already tried to run apache from YaST >> Runlevel editor. Hopefully the command line will work for you...

Doesn't work !
Still gives me the same error ...

Looks really bad. Fire up YaST and remove Apache. Then, choose the option "Simple Webserver with Apache" under the "Install / Remove Applications". Doing that, you will make sure that Apache, PHP and MySQL packages and modules are correctly installed. (even if you don't need/want PHP and MySQL, you can remove it later).

After that, try to restart apache (either with YaST or the command I gave you...). If still does not work, make sure to update your system... it could be a bug and SuSE tends to fix things pretty quick.

I also found this thread for you:

http://coolsolutions.com/forums/view...564&highlight=

and things seems to get fixed once you reinstall apache.

Well, I think those were all my Pokemon cards in this thread :).

Good luck!

I' ve reinstalled Apache and now it works.
However, on http://localhost, it gives me an "access forbidden" error message and doesn't recognize PHP file extensions.
I've added one line to conf file, with "AddType application/x-http-php .php", and nothing changed.
How to solve this ?

Ugh my apache is failing to start as well. I just uninstalled the package and reinstalled it, but it stil doesn't start. Returned 7 same error as above.

Now, forgive my ignorance, but do I need to set up the DHCP Server, DNS Server, or DNS and Host Name first?
Thanks.

Well, now I get an error. Could not determine the server's fully qualified domain name, using 127.0.0.1 for ServerName ... failed.

When I look in httpd.conf, I don't see ServerName listed in there. If I add it and put in localhost, it still does not start, but I don't get that error anymore..

I'm lost. I need a SuSe book. I can't find info on the web that solves the problem.
