Apache subdomains like Samba home-shares

I just installed Apache and so far it's working great.
I also managed to set up a subdomain johndoe.myserver.

Now I'd like to have a subdomain for every user on my machine but I am not looking forward to adding them to the httpd.conf one by one. Instead, I'd like to do it the way Samba does it for the home-directories.

Samba only needs one directive to publically share the home-directory for every user.

Is there a way to map to /home/user/htdocs without a big effort?

Ps. if it's not easily possible to map to /home/user/htdocs,
would it be possible to use instead?
