Apache Setup on Redhat 9

Hi!

Im kinda new to Linux and Im having trouble setting up Apache on it though.

There is documentation with Redhat which I dont seem it understand.

I just want to setup a local server on my box without a Domain name and have that box access the internet.

Like for instance I have IIS setup and to access my pages I just goto 12.243.43.131/index.html and everything fine however I dont like the way that IIS runs.

How would I do this with Apache?

Some specific things that I dont understand are:

Server Name in Basic Setup: The Redhat guide tells you to type the name of the server that you have access to. Well, if I want to use my machine as the server than:
Do I just type in my IP address?

VirtualHost Setup:
What I am supposed to do here? I dont understand this. I dont want to run two sites on my server just my IP based one.

Restarting HTTD:

When I run the command "service httpd restart" it is not reconizing that as a command!

Help Please

Server name - no just leave it - it will default to the name you connect with

Virtual host - do nothing unless you want to host multiple sites

starting - it depends how you installed it - try:
apachectl restart
or /sbin/service httpd restart

You will need to be root to do this.

Yea I left everything left you said and when I log in as root and run the command.

service httpd restart

it tries to stop httpd and then to start it, however they both fail.

Is that because the Apache config is screwed up?

It does exactly what I said.

Stoping HTTPD Failed
Starting HTTPD Failed

So let me get this straight in order to run Apache I dont have to mess with any configs.

When I start HTTP server configuration what exactly do I have to change, I am really turned around about this now.

I try to access a page via http://localhost/index.html.

and nothing pops up.

Thanks for the assistance so far.

Have you done anything to the config at all? I assume it is just the version of apache that came with RedHat 9.

I have done nothing to the config at all.

I have apache running on my other partition however on port 80.

Could that be the reason why the command wont work?

The other partition is a windows partition and I am running Apache with PHP and MySQL however like I said the apache server is listening on port 80.

I see this as a problem, what do you think?

You should be able to check your error log to at least get a hint at what is wrong. Do you have any log entries to show us?
