apache server
 
just to start off... i am a complete newb, i have never set up a server before, and this is just something i am doing for the fun of it...

aight i have mandrake linux install, i have apache and everything working, so i can access the website on localhost, now how do i make it so i can access that from other computers over the internet useing its ip address....

Well I'm no expert in this but I suppose you need a domain name, or at least a static address. Sorry but this how extensive my knowledge is :)

I am sure a more experienced user will jump in here and give you some pointers but as far as a static address, there is a work around. You can use a service such as DynDNS.org . The site can explain how it works and it is free. I know there are others for dynamically assigned IPs but I am familiar with that one and it works well. One tip, if you are setting up the server in your home (using say DSL or Cable) make sure your ISP does not block port 80 coming back to you. It was a real pain to troubleshoot basically because I did not think of it. Someone on this site (my apologies for not knowing a name) pointed it out that some ISPs do it and it turned out mine did. If you find out that it is in fact blocked you have to listen on another port (like 8000 or 8080). Good luck.
