apache noob - errors when starting

( i was going to call this thred 'apache noob cant get it up, but i thought better of it :P )

i have just installed apache mysql and php to do some webdesign dev-work to pass the lonley seconds of my life. i get this:
Code:
bash-2.05b# /etc/init.d/apache2 start
 * Starting apache2...                                                    [ !! ]
the logs say this:
Code:
[Thu Mar 17 23:50:04 2005] [error] (2)No such file or directory: Cannot create SSLMutex with file `/var/cache/apache2/ssl_mutex.29656'
Configuration Failed
and to install it i did this:
Code:
USE="-* mysql" emerge mysql apache php mod_php
bash-2.05b# /usr/bin/mysql_install_db
/etc/init.d/mysql start
mysql -u root [added passwords for root]
vi /etc/conf.d/apache2 yealds the following (comments edited out for ease of reeding)
Code:
#swiching on PHP4
APACHE2_OPTS="-D SSL -D PHP4"

PIDFILE=/var/run/apache2.pid

RESTARTSTYLE="graceful"

it probably somthing really simple (well in the linux sence of the word)
i would appriecate any help.

Ensure /var/cache/apache2 is created and writeable, I'd say.
