apache .htaccess basic authentication not working quite right

I'm trying to do some very simple protection of a directory on a web server. Awesome security is not paramount.

Anyway, I have followed the guide to a tee, and now I am given an auth box to authorize with. So far so good.

However, no username/password works. I've created the file with htpasswd -c and pointed apache to it in the .htaccess file. I have specified the users I wish to be allowed to connect.

What's going on? This is the latest apache 1.3.

Can you post a copy of your .htaccess file.

I assume you are being prompted to enter a password?

What is the name and path of the password file? Is it readable by the webserver user?

here's the .htaccess file....

Code:
AuthType Basic
AuthName "Private"
AuthUserFile /usr/local/apache/passwd/passwords
Require user testuser
yes, the file is readable by apache....
