Apache 2.0 problems
 

Apache 2.0 takes up to 99% of CPU & 0.7 of Memory when Apache 1.3 on the same server used about 20% of CPU & 0.7% of Memory. At some point the load average reaches up to 8.0+ and apache freezes. The apache logs doesn't help much. Maybe it crashes before writing to the logs files.

Any ideas what should I do? And how can I catch what causes the problem?
Is the problem is related to Apache 2.0 release? Why Apache uses a lot of CPU and not much memory.

That is really strange. I reccomend compiling apache from source. Although its harder than using a binary, you'll get a well-configured version, and its easier to debug.

I know this doesn't really answer your problem, but apaches website says that 1.3.27 is the best version of their web server.

I just compiled a fresh 1.3.27, and my server has been up for 8 days running apache with php mysql, and ssl while maintaining a 0.00 load average.

What distro are you trying to run this on?

Red Hat 8.0

I have installed Redhat 9 and I have my email, network routing, ftp, and web servers running and working. I figured out that the web serverrs index.html file goes in /var/www/html but when I try to brows my domain in a browser I still get the blasted "Test Page", I've poked thru the httpd.conf file and tried the GUI HTTP Serrver application as well ... still get the blasted "Test Page" ....... anyone got a solution ...... does the index.html file need a specific permisssion set?

You need to change the DocumentRoot to where index.html is.

mikeshn: I'm running an apache 1.3.27 on a redhat 8 without problems. Are you running the standard RedHat server or some 3rd party rpm? Or did you compile from source?

Check ps to see if httpd is running more than once.

The DocumentRoot line in my httpd.conf file is

DocumentRoot "/var/www/html"

do I need to restart httpd Daemon everry ttime I change the httpd.conf file?

I am running redhat, I think it is 7.3, with apache 1.3.27, with the mod_ssl, perl, php, etc, I have no problems with it. I did install from source.

esw: Yes, you need to restart the daemon, and there is another place in httpd.conf that it is a good idea to change to match your DocumentRoot. Just search for the string "DocumentRoot" in vi or whatever you like to find it and change it.

Thanks ... Ill take a look through the config again ..... I discoverred tonight that if I type www.mydomain.net/index.html that my web page loads but if I type just www.mydomain.net in a browser then I just get the default "Test Page" ......

AH HA! :D

I changed the default: DocumentRoot "/var/www/html"
and changed it to: DocumentRoot /var/www/html/

then the changed the defalt line: DirectoryIndex
to: DirectoryIndex index.html

now its working fine :D
