I have an AOL online account, but thier software is not supported by Linux. Does anyone know if the actual username is in a format other than username@aol.com or something else that would prevent kPPP from connecting with a known access number?
Most of the mail services are POP3. Ie mail,AOL.com and smtp.AOL.com. However, they have made it proprietary just like MSN has done. Most mail transport programs just can't handle the User Name of Blank@msn.com, or Blank@hotmail.com, as the " @ " is an illegal alpha character.
If there is one that can, PLEASE someone let me know. Now Comcast is easy. mail.comcast.net and smtp.comcast.net See, easy. But the extras and things you can do with your mail are not as good as with other services. In my humble opinion.
I used MSN, never AOL. I was asking becaus I was helping a friend. The AOL website still has links about retrieving your mail from them with other mail clients. I didn't read them, but maybe they will help you. Unless they just say, "You can't." Which would be about as sucky as you would expect.
I have done support for a person that uses AOL with linux and I came across this nifty page here. Only did one install of this, and I can't remember the distro, but it worked fine.
Yeah, I found out about the PengAOL program through another thread on this forum. You guys are great. I have yet to get it set up on his machine as it is tough with the driving and all. Things are looking good so far.
