Anyone help with KDE4 - 101??
On Friday when KDE4 was released, like millions of others
I eagerly installed it from the Ubuntu repos and all went well...but now I seem to have 3.5 and 4.0?? UbuntuGeek.com has a tutorial for how to install and upgrade so KDE4 is your only interface. All seems logical until the last paragraph... "To avoid having to start a second X server for a full session install xserver-xephyr and run Xephyr :1 & export DISPLAY=:1; xterm and run startkde in the Xerphyr xterm." ...I came to Linux during the reign of Feisty Fawn, so I'm fairly new to the lingo. I installed xephyr, but could someone decode that last line and tell me exactly what I need to type, and into what, to make the remnants of 3.5 go away?? Thanks, Michael, [Using Kubuntu, 7.10] |
I think perhaps you misunderstood what he was trying to teach you how to do? xephyr is a nested X server, so it's kinda a way to run a graphical environment in a window of another graphical environment. So the "Xephyr :1" command starts a little window on your screen on display 1, the "export DISPLAY=:" tells all applications in that terminal to put all their graphical apps on the X server at display 1, and the startkde starts kde4 running inside the xephyr.
My guess would be that there are two packages, one something like kde-desktop and one like kde4-desktop. Just remove the kde-desktop. I'm not sure, that's just my hunch. |
