anyone have a simple samba - xp setup they want to share?

i have a fc 5 box and a xp box. they are not friends, but i need them to be.

i can ping the server name of the fc 5 box, i can even view the pages in my browser .. so the network is good. i cannot, however, browse to my var/www/html directory. i have tried every combo of security = share, = user, etc etc i can think of over the last 3 days - but no luck.

maybe i just need to start from the beginning? does anyone have a smb.conf file that allows any box on the network to get into the apache web dir listed above?

if someone could suggest a nice list of 1, 2, 3 and BAM fixed that'd be great!

I tested this one a couple minutes ago...
As seen from swat; here it is...

<code>

[global]
workgroup = UNIARDE-LAN
security = SHARE
guest account = samba
wins server = 192.168.0.1

[files]
comment = Area geral de ficheiros
path = /.disk1/samba
read only = No
guest ok = Yes

</code>

I have a 'samba' user and group; shared dir is owned by 'samba', perms 755

Have fun

the issue that seems to be happening to me is that i can see the folder and everything from my win box, but when i try to access the folder the login box pops up ... the username is greyed out and has the HOSTNAME/Guest as the username, and then asks for a password - and no combinations work. Do I need to create a Guest account?

The small config I posted previously worked first stab with me, here at work. It's supposed to let *ANY* user browse and access the share listed. This was tried on a fresh Slackware 11 install, samba-3.0.23c, all with stock packages and no tricks needed. On another thread you started with this same subject, I posted a share configuration which worked on my own FreeBSD server, running samba-3.0.20 .

You can try and follow RHCE's suggestion, on creating the 'Guest' account both in the system and in samba's password file. This will demand authentication before accessing the share, but at this point I think you wouldn't mind that...

Unless some samba guru jumps in and teach us both some new tricks you may well be stuck... :P

Cheers

*EDIT*
I decided to post my full smb.conf, as sween from SWAT... Maybe Fedora's samba package's compiled with different defaults than Slackware's... Try to spot'em...
