Yes, I manage a web farm consisting of 200+ systems all running RHEL...

Also I run Fedora on my laptop...

Yes, lots of RedHat users. Do you mean RedHat 5, or RedHat ENTERPRISE linux 5? If you're using RedHat Enterprise linux, my first suggestion would be for you to call RedHat support, or check their online knowledgebase, since you're paying for it with your subscription.

If you're not paying for it, I'd suggest you load a community-supported distro, like CentOS, OpenSuSE, etc....

I am Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 user

See the main thing is i waana play video files of all formats including flv and open word files in rhel 5. I did download the things like vlc and open office and i also downloaded real player and installed the rpm by just a double click but when i am trying to install the rpm of vlc its opening a folder say . dot and inside that there are folders like bin and share and again it has many folders in folders what to install and how

r u guys getting folders in folders

and when i am trying to install the rpms from the open office tar file as it conatins a rpms folder and divyashree told me that need to install all the rpms again there are several rpms and when i am trying to install them samething few are opening a new folder usr and that contains share & bin folders and few opening the dot folder by the symbol . and again it contains many folders inside it what to do like as d rpm of real player got installed just by a double click why vlc and open office rpms are opening folders in folders instead of getting installed

i googled and downloaded the things but now main thing is why they arent getting installed do we have a special procedure as they are opening folders in folders

Are you guys getting me that the rpm of real player just got installed by a double click and i can play m p3 files in red hat but when i am trying to install the rpms of vlc and open office folders are opening like suppose i will click d rpm of vlc den a folder is there by the name . when i am opening . two folders are there bin and share again when i am opening either of them more folders are there now what to do

I'm sorry, I can barely understand you. Please use proper English, especially since not all of us speak English as a first language.

Anyway, you don't have to manually install RPMs. Try
Code:
yum install vlc
or calling RedHat since you're paying for it.

Fedora/RedHat can be quite similar, depending on the version. Solaris is likely to be about as different as another Unixy system can be as its not linux.

Please try reading that out to yourself, respecting the punctuation that you have chosen (or not) to use. You are making it difficult to understand what you are getting at, and breaking things up into paragraphs and sentences and using white space and commas would help everyone who reads it, whether English was their first language, or not.

One of the things that you might have been doing (I'm not clear about this) is try to open the .rpms with a file browser like konqueror. When used as a file browser, konqueror is able to understand the structure of .tar.gz files and .rpms and dig into that structure transparently. Of course, this 'helps' in meaning that there is less messing about to find out what is inside such files, but it can also confuse the neophyte as to what is actually there but 'zipped-up' into an archive and what is there but as an actual separate directory/file structure.

As to the question, I think alucard has given you one perfectly good answer (it isn't clear why you had to go through the introductory round of eliminating all non-RH users to ask that, though; many others would have known that, and all you did was give them the impression that this was RH-specific, when it wasn't, really).

Real PLayer and Open Office Got Installed

I installed real player just by double click on rpm and open office as well coz der was just a setup file to double click on and der were loads of rpms and i was thinking that i need to install dem manually one by one but thanks i found the single double click set up file.

Now when i was trying to install vlc in another machine with rhel 5 installed with the same dvd it was showing 1 dependency, now in my home machine its showing more then 10 dependencies where to get all those and why its showing different number of dependency in different machines with the same rhel 5 from the same dvd

and the command yum install vlc will work if i have installed yum server and if i am registered with red hat. Am i right or not?

is there any video player that can play all types of format like avi,mpeg,3gp and much more including flv files as well. I know vlc does the same but anyother????????

AND CAN YOU GUYS LET ME KNOW A GOOD BOOK TO LEARN MORE ABOUT RHEL 5,DO TELL THE WRITERS NAME ALONG WITH THE PUBLICATIONS. THANKS ALL

The dependencies are library dependencies. VLC depends on many codec libraries which may not be existing on one of your systems. You need to install them before you can install VLC. Fortunately YUM can do that provided you are connected to INTERNET.

Yes, it will only work if you configure yum to use a Yum server. and No, you don't have to have a valid redhat license for connecting to other available Yum servers such as rpmfusion.org. However, if you intend to use only redhat's Yum servers, then you may need to have a valid license.

Try this:
http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-fedora.html

Also, if you have the rpm files for vlc readily with you why don't you try the --nodeps option while installing??

Ex: rpm -ivh --nodeps vlc-*.rpm

Why are sticking to Redhat 5, that too without a valid support license? There are too many good distros out there with excellent community support. I suggest you try Fedora or CentOS if you want to get more acquainted with redhat flavor.
