Any opinions on Sophos free antivirus?

I'm running Xubuntu 15.10. I don't even know if the Sophos free a/v will work on my machine. Anybody know? And anybody know if the Sophos is worthwhile installing? Thanks.

Your computer is filled with your personal information, and if your computer is a Mac then it was also probably a significant investment. To protect your machine and your information there are antivirus products like Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac (Free), which puts antivirus and Web protection on your Mac. We look forward to testing it soon.

I personally consider anti-virus products to be snake oil ... and a potential attack vector due to their capabilities and intrusiveness.

Instead:
  • Use good passwords and change them.
  • Keep system software up to date.
  • Don't run as an administrator, a member of the wheel group, etc., except when you are actively performing system maintenance.
  • Use different user accounts for different purposes, and to protect the files associated with that activity.
  • Never have a "guest account."
  • Don't have open shares in a coffee shop.
  • Don't allow your phone or your computer to "connect to public networks automatically."
  • If you're writing a paper over coffee, (a) turn wireless off, and (b) keep that cup of coffee  far away  from your laptop!
  • Have high-quality backup software (such as Apple's Time Machine) running constantly against a portable external drive.

"Anti-Virus" on a Desktop is useless, and not worth installing.
That is my opinion.

An odd first post ... why would you recommend a MacOS product in a Linux Software forum?

Thanks very much. I'll definitely be passing on the a/v. And thanks for the security tips, sundial.
