Any comment on Ximian Desktop and red-carpet
 

Hi all folks,

Has any folk tried Xd2 (Ximian Desktop 2) and
red-carpet-2.0.1-0.ximian.5.1.1" Kindly share your experience comparing
it with KDE and GNOME. Can I run it on RH 8.0 without affecting KDE and
GNOME?

I've tried Ximian Desktop 2 in a workstation with RH9 running and it sucks!!. You will need about 200MB of free space to install it, and it will install ximian's rpm for many other programs, like xmms, screensaver etc. If you use apt o redhat's up2date for keeping your system secure the will crush because of dependency problems.

I haven't work with Gnome, but in my opinion the weren't many differences with my old KDE Desktop, sorry XDesktop2 was very slow in comparison. Finally I remove ximian's rpms and I keep my old KDE but with some little problems...

In my opinion it doesn't have any interesting new option and it hasn't a clean instalation program. I can't live without my apt!! :-P. I've also Red Carpet, I use it, for upgrading Ximian Evolution my e-mail client, and the best Ximian product BTW ;-).

Im running ximian desktop 2 with redhat 8 here at work.. we just rolled out all our workstations with linux, and installed ximian to help our reps migrate..

So far I havn't encountered any major problems.. It is a massive download, but worth it imho..

I can post some screenshots if ya want...

Thanks for your advice.

I came across Ximian Desktop2 when I tried to upgrade Evolution-1.0.8 to version 1.4.3. As advised by its website I need to install Redcarpet. On installing the latter they further advise me to install Xd2.

Now I have following packages downloaded;

evolution-1.4.3-0.ximian.5.1.i386.rpm
evolution-devel-1.4.3-0.ximian.5.1.i386.rpm
rcd-1.4.4-0.ximian.5.1.i386.rpm
red-carpet-2.0.1-0.ximian.5.1.1.i386.rpm
rug-1.4.4-0.ximian.5.1.i386.rpm

I don't know what are "rcd-1.4.4-0.ximian.5.1.i386.rpm" and
"rug-1.4.4-0.ximian.5.1.i386.rpm" and what are they used for.

It is also not very clear to me whether I need Xd2 to install RedCarpet?

Furthermore if I install Xd2 with command line
"wget -q -O - http://go.ximian.com | sh"

can I remove it latter completely/"all packages collectively" (not package one by one)

Could you please give me some more advice?

I'm not sure on the taking out Ximian desktop, it has a few good features but after installing my KDE wasn't working properly because ximian seemed to take over all parts of my Window managers, and then I couldn't get my KDE shortcuts to work with KDE. IMHO Ximian Desktop is good but it wants to be the only window manager on your machine, so if you like GNOME I believe Ximian should be a good fit, however, I have changed back to my KDE.

You don't need Red Carpet to upgrade evolution. If you execute the command to install XD2 : "wget -q -O - http://go.ximian.com | sh" you can install only Evolution 1.4 without more Ximian packages, I've done this in my home and there weren't any problems about ;-).

You can also get Red Carpet and it will work without XD2 need to be installed, rcd package is something Red Carpet use.

And finally you ask if you can remove all packages collectively, when I remove XD2 from my computer I didn't find the option to do this, I use apt to find broken dependencies, and Ximian packages and I remove then installing the old ones, but it wasn't a very clean proccess I think. That's all folks :-P

I will try to use the command line

"wget -q -O - http://go.ximian.com | sh"

to download and upgrade to "evolution-1.4.3"

What I am most concerned is to retain all old email boxes with their content, not to be erased/replaced during upgrade. Can it be done???

Furthermore what is Red Carpet used for ?

I think that folders and mails are automatically imported during the instalation. But you should backup evolution directory in your home in case it doesn't do it well and then you have import all folders manually, but I think is automatic.

Red Carpet is a Ximian program similar to apt for debian. If you haven't use apt yet, DOWNLOAD IT!!. apt is a program that check all dependencies for rpms and it downloads all necesary packages. i.e

apt-get install mozilla

will download mozilla rpm and all dependicies. But the most usefull utility is to keep your system up2date as redhat up2date but in a best way. If you do

apt-get update
apt-get upgrade or apt-get dist-upgrade

the program will download a list of actual rpms for your system, it will check yours, and it will download the new rpms. i.e. you have kde 3.0 in your system and kde 3.1 is out, apt will check it, download all needes packages and then install them, without any dependency problems.

So Red Carpet has the same functionality, but I prefer apt, and don't want to use only Ximian packages but Red Carpet it's ok for upgrading evolution and Ximian products.

I am going to backup Evolution folder with following command;

$ tar czvf ~/backup-local.tar.gz ~/evolution/local/

I have "apt-get" running on RH8.0 but without RedHat up2date. I think to install Red Carpet will not be necessary.
