Any better ATI driver?

I'm really tired of ATI's slow linux drivers! 3d apps run TWICE as fast on WinXP than on Debian!

Are there any ways to accerate my 3d apps? Is there an alternative ATI driver?

Thanks

What driver are you using in your xorg.conf (or XF86Config-4) file? radeon or fglrx?

I generally think it's the opposite. But not after 2.6.13-ck2 .. Could be another kernel / ati-drivers mismatch. I could easily run windows games like WoW with less lag than in Windows. What distro, driver version etc are you using?

I'm using fglrx, cs-cam.

I'm on Debian. Kernel 2.6.12.5. Fglrx driver 8.14.13.

Any ideas?

Then nope. That's the official ATI driver, it's as good as you're going to get.

I know this is not the answer you wanted... but consider switching to a nVidia-card. It's worth it, especially if you can get a reasonable price of your old video card.

I switched 5 Radeons away, never going back. Used to be a big ATI-buyer, not anymore after fighting with the instability and speed issues of their Linux-drivers. I'm building computers for living and now the only video cards I'm placing to them have nVidia's chipset.

If you think it's going to get any better, think again. nVidia has had stable drivers for Linux since ages, ATI is still struggling. For example Mandriva 2005 PowerPack with the out-of-the-box compiled and installed official ATI-drivers was locking up randomly a few times a week. If I compiled the drivers myself (if I COULD even get them to compile), it was even worse.

It's just not worth it.
