Any alternatives to Fastlynx? (parallel file transfer software)

I have spent countless hours trying to connect my redhat 9 desktop to my windows xp laptop using only a parallel cable. This includes trying to make a PLIP connection while running a Live CD of Mandrake on my xp laptop. NOTHING WILL WORK. If you wanna know the whole story look for a thread by me listed under "Networking."

I did a series of google searches and came up this software called FastLynx: www.sewelld.com/FastLynx_Linux.asp - it is designed to aid in the transfer of files from pc-to-pc and can work with linux platforms. On the downside you have to pay for it.

I want to know...
Is there any freeware alternative available that is similar to FastLynx and can work with Windows-to-Linux parallel cable connections?

I know what some of you are saying, why not just pay the $39.95 and buy FastLynx?! Well there are 2 reasons: 1. I'm a college student on a limited budget and will do anything to save some money, and more importantly 2. There's no gurantee that FastLynx will work if you look at how successful I've been so far, and for the price of the software I might as well buy an ethernet hub and make a connection that way.

Any help here would be greatly appreciated.

This is an old thread but I thought I would report that there is now a nagware version of this software that makes it extremely easy to set up a parallel port connection.
