Anti-Virus Scan (avscan) update
Folks,
I can run avscan* from a user terminal and scan a file, file(s) and directories. However I can not run the update function.
When I click on the GUI's update button I get the following error message: -
Quote:
"You may not be able to update the virus database because the virus database update program:
/usr/bin/freshclam
Is not set SETUID and you are not the owner of it. Do you want to try and update the virus database anyway?"
|
Needless to say, clicking yes doesn't help.
Any suggestions?
* as far as I can tell avscan is just a GUI front end for clamav and freshclam.

Have you tried editing the menu icon to make it 'run as' root?

avscan update (via freshclam) now works
I have managed to fix the update error by logging in as root and changing the files permissions as follows: -
Quote:
chmod u+s /usr/bin/freshclam
|
The tool now work fine for standard users.
Thanks,

freshclam package update (breaks avscan update function)
I just recently loaded a later freshclam package as a more recent version just became available through the repositories however I noticed that as a result it breaks the avscan update function. Of course I can easily fix it by manually reapplying the followign command
Quote:
chmod u+s /usr/bin/freshclam
|
Is there a reason that they project owners distribute the /usr/bin/freshclam file without the setuserid bit set and if so why dont they automatically apply the chmod command as part of the package update process (or is there a good security reason not to do this)?
