Short answer: You don't really need it.

Longer answer: Use the search for the site, there's been a couple of discussions about Linux and viruses which should cover most of it.

The only virusses that can really harm a Linux system are windows ones that run under wine. These can propogate as normal and if you have the windows exe mime type set up like in KDE or something, it can run straight away, forward itself with wine's inbuilt SMTP engine and be just as destructive. There are only a few virii known for Linux, most of them depend on a server vulnerability or the user mistakenly installing it. There is an anti virus program for Linux (F-PROT) but I don't know whether its free or how good it is.

You can be your own antivirus:
don't run root if you don't need it and you'll be ok

if you are not root because of the file permissions you cant write out side of your home directory so only thing virri can do you is mess with your home files.and you cant effect other user in the machine but if you are root you are death

bah' I don't trust it and I don't trust you winking at me either :D

the f-prot works pretty well. the command line version
is free for personal use, which is true for the linux version.
i use it all the time to delete klez attachments out of my
email. I also put it on my custom knoppix cdrom to
check others windows machines for virii.

P.S. Not to affend any of our fine women here but I went to school with a lot of women and there were no good looking girls who were into computers. My girlfriend doesn't know much about computers and I'd like to keep it that way.
