Another VMware question

Ok Guys...here's the situation....before we talk about vmware this is how my comp is set up....i'm currently dual booting between debian and windows xp. Now, I want to be able to run that exact linux partition within windows using vmware because I don't want to have to always reboot to use the other operating system.

So I set it up using the partitions....but one problem, I can't get X to work. It goes straight into the console. I heard that installing vmware tools 'might' help but I'm worried that it might affect booting into linux normally.

I'm wanting to do this because right now I have an Intel Centrino and linux has no drivers for its wireless card. And I want to be able to use linux and the wireless card. Also, how would I configure it so it will use the external network?

Will this configuration do anything w/ linux if I wanted to boot into it normally?

Any ideas or recommendations?

anyone know?

cyph3r7 07-05-2003 07:53 PM

Never used VMWare is such a convoluted way before. Always installed it on an existing OS then loaded it w/ an OS I want to run. As for the tools, yes they include the appropriate video drivers. As for the wireless card, my assumption is VMWare will make it a bridged network as it normally does.

Remember, unless you are running VMWare GSK server, it runs a host OS/guest OS scenario.

VMware makes a virtual NIC for the OS (guest) to use. Then it will make it bridged into the network. If you can find a wireless NIC that can hook up to the USB or serial. You can use that instead.

In windows make another hardware profile or make a small image partition in VMware for only to be used in LINUX.

Check intel site for any drivers for linux.

Install the vmware tools. It will not affect the original linux. However life is not all that good. When you boot linux under vmware, linux configures X differently than under normal linux booting. If you want to boot linux normally again you have to go tru the 'X configurator thingy' to allow Linux to boot. Vmware seems to 'overwrite' the original X-configuration files. So you have to go back and forth to configure X everytime you boot 'vmware linux' and 'original linux'
