Xchat gives the option to "open in a new tab" - what are you using?

And this is moved to Linux-Software as it isn't Slackware specific.

I had the same problem with firefox. I found and used this wrapper which opened new tabs for me. I don't know if it workd with mozilla but you can give it a try.

#!/bin/sh
export MOZILLA_FIVE_HOME="/usr/local/lib/firefox-0.9.3"

url="$1"
if [ "x$url" = "x" ]; then
url="about:blank"
fi

if $MOZILLA_FIVE_HOME/mozilla-xremote-client -a firefox openURL\("$url",new-tab\); then
exit 0
fi
exec $MOZILLA_FIVE_HOME/firefox "$url"

Good luck.

Here's also my solution:
Code:
#!/bin/sh
if [ `ps -C firefox-bin -o comm= | wc -l` -gt 0 ]; then
  /opt/firefox/mozilla-xremote-client -a firefox "openURL($1,new-window)"
else
  /opt/firefox/firefox "$1"
fi
It works with Firefox 0.9.3
