Annoying modem sound when connecting


Hi ppl
after finding a modem driver for my conexant chipset a started using linux :-) but the noise when modem is connecting is very annoying
how can i turn it off???

use at command:
atM0

which will set modem speaker to: off

anyway, you should make a search for at commands on the net.

Are you using Kppp? Check the Setup... -> Modem tab for a Modem Volume slider.

If you're using scripts like pppd-up, or I think wvdial, see the Modem Commands... tab instead which tells me the volume off command for the modem is M0L0, instead of M1L1 or M1L3.

I've got the same modem and it is a winmodem. It's a modem/soundcard combo, so apparently the M0 command doesen't work...
UPDATE: I used KMix to turn down/mute the speaker. Look for it in KDE (K Icon->Multimedia->KMix), and turn down the 'Speaker' slider all the way...hope this helps you like it did for me.
