Anki - can't connect to AnkiWeb from Ubuntu 12.04

When the program opens, I get these messages:

##################################################
There was a connection error. If it persists, please try disabling your
firewall software temporarily, or try again from a different network.

Debugging info: HTTPError()
##################################################

Starting it up from Linux command line gives me this output:

##################################################
matt@matt-NV57H:~/Downloads$ anki
/usr/share/anki/anki/deck.py:3597: SAWarning: Unicode column received non-unicode default value.
Column('name', UnicodeText, nullable=False, default=""),
