animated wallpapers

I noticed that Vista has animated wallpapers when I was at my friend's home. Can Linux do that?

Yes, indeed, I've been using animated wallpaper on my Enlightenment install - sorry I can't offer you more info atm; I'm replying from an internet cafe, and a power-out at home limits my access to my *nix system....

How do you do it? Do you use gif images? Where do you get the animated wallpapers?

One way is to run xscreensaver modules with -root switch:

/usr/libexec/xscreensaver/glmatrix -root

This draws the 3d matrix on the background. The location might be different in your distro. It's also possible to player mplayer in the root window with videos. Not sure about gif though.
